Some destinations for local trips

I don’t want to write much about the most famous destinations such as Florence, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra - nearly everybody has heard something about them or they are already on your list to visit .
Anyway you get a lot of information in every current travel guide.
I would like to report about the less-known regional landmarks, which are rarely mentioned.

Discover the fascinating villages, such as Montemassi, Roccatederighi, Gavorrano, Scarlino or Tatti, mentioning only a few of them. There are narrow angular alleyways, which are only passable by pedestrians, little places and houses made up of stone, partly build into the rocks.

San Giminiano

Roccatederighi

By preserving the medieval character of the buildings you feel like entering the past.
Last, but not least, it is the forests, from their awakening in the spring to the end of October, when the colour spectrum of vivacious greens is replaced by an enchanting panorama of vivid autumn colours, that make it especially worth visiting this region.

Absolutely worth mentioning is Massa Marittima, a pretty medieval village with an enchanting pedestrian zone, appealing shops and a lively square in front of the cathedral, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. In the period of the warm months you can see lots of activity in the streets until late at night. There are extraordinarily good restaurants, bars and ice cream parlours, which are partly build in restored arches of cellars (like caves). Also the museum of mine is worth a trip.

The capital of the province is Grosseto (70 000 inhabitants) also established with a pedestrian area and many nice shops, also a cathedral and a complete well-preserved city wall in the shape of a star.

In the abbey of San Galgano (a little bit off the route Siena – Massa Marittima) you can see the impressive walls of one of the first Gothic churches. The exterior walls are partly well preserved or partly restored, only the former lead roof is missing, but just this tarnish makes an extra special scene.

An other recommendable destination is the "Garden of Tarot" created by Niki de Saint Phalle. Lying in the southern corner of the province Grosseto, near Capalbio, it presents an unique spectacle. In midst of the splendid nature the famous French artist has created oversized pot-bellied sculptures built of cement and polyester wainscoted with several materials such as tiles, glass and mirrors. Some figures are even so large that you can enter inside them.

The natural protected area of the Maremma ”il Parco dell’Uccellina” was the first regional park in the Tuscany. It measures roughly 9,000 ha along the Tuscan coastline between Principina a Mare and Talamone. A piece of unspoilt nature with opulent vegetation and a diversity of different and rare kinds of animals. Often it is possible to observe herds of horses or the typical cattle of the Maremma with their long, twisted horns on the meadows . The "butteri", called the "Tuscan cowboys", take care of the free-living hordes.
You can visit the park with shuttle buses or by walking. WWW.girando.it

The wildlife shelter for turtles and storks "Carapax„ was built in cooperation with the European Community and takes care of the adoption, reproduction and scientific investigations of the turtles. The area is about 15 ha and accommodates thousands of turtles of the area of the Mediterranean, but also from Japan, Florida and Africa. There are also storks and other animals.
Visitors can explore the centre only by the marked and prepared paths, which lead to all enclosures

Monte Argentario

A further destination is the peninsula ”Monte Argentario”, where not only the village Porto S. Stefano and Port ‘Ercole with their harbours are impressive. Also enjoy a trip around the island and a beautiful panorama.
Pay attention: the round tour around the complete island is only advisable for four-wheeled vehicles because of the very poor road conditions.
The ferry leaves Porto S. Stefano to the isle of Giglio, which is also known as "The Isle of the lilies". Also advisable for a full day outing (without car) is Gianutri, the "isle of the lovers”.

Porto Azzuro

You can reach the island of Elba from Piombino by ferry in one hour or by hydrofoil (traghetto) in 30 minutes. The island is not only worth visiting because Napoleon was there in exile, it is absolutely delightful because of the landscape and the beautiful beaches. It is a paradise for scuba and skin divers. If going by car, don’t forget to make your reservations in time for the ferry in July / August because in the main season the island is a most attractive destination for holiday-makers.

Really interesting are the Etruscan excavations in Vetulonia (places of excavations and necropolis), Populonia (partly accessible graves!) and Roselle (place of excavations and amphitheatre).

Also worthwhile is a full day outing to Rome (in a distance of nearly 200 km).

I would be happy to organize an attractive travel programme for you. Whether it be a tasteful wedding in Tuscany, a wine-tasting with samples of olive oil directly from the manufacturer or a fishing and hunting trip. ToscanaSi! makes it possible for you.

I look forward to greeting you in Tuscany!
